Liability Insurance

I have seen more talk recently about liability insurance against gun violence. Mass shootings will continue to happen as long as guns are available. We just have too many messed up individuals in America. It's not a matter of mental health but of one's morals and values which have been corrupted. I am not one to say take away the guns or makes bullets $100/piece. But I believe something needs to happen.

This is were I believe the insurance industry could help mitigate the problem. If it was mandated by the government that if you want to own a weapon you must also have liability insurance on that weapon. Multiple weapons, you get a discount like cars and homeowners policies. Everyone would have to pay including gun shops that sell the weapons, not sure about gun manufacturers involvement as they don't sell directly to the public but maybe they could contribute to a dedicated fund that the insurance companies would contribute to as well to help compensate victims.

In this scenario gun shops would need to be more observant in who they sell to by maybe asking more questions about patrons thoughts on race, religion, etc and maybe a check of social media or maybe they can hire an outside expert to help as their rates would increase if they are shown to sell to deranged individuals that commit these crimes. This expert cost could be past down to the customer by an increase in the cost of the weapon. Buyers would have to get insurance which means the insurance company would need to evaluate who you are as a risk. Insurance companies are very good at assessing risk and this could be another revenue source for them. If you cannot find an insurance company that thinks you are a good risk you don't get to own a firearm.

The insurance companies would figure out how to tell the deranged from the safe by analysis of past behaviors, past criminal activity, past social media interactions and the relationship they have had with the gun owner prior to the purchase, if any. This could open up a whole new profession of experts in social media detectives.

Let's try something besides thoughts and prayers.

Yes, I am a gun owner.
